Chapter 7

That Attia didn’t think me insane for my proposal made me feel a little better, though if the way her raised eyebrows said anything, she seemed surprised by my suggestion. And maybe there was reason for it.

I wasn’t usually reckless, and I could admit that trying to kill a monster like the one we had faced before was the height of recklessness, and yet, I didn’t think it was impossible.

A saying from some movie back on Earth came to mind about how if something could bleed, it could die. And we had made the armadillo bleed quite a bit. Well, Lisette more than me, though that seemed a good enough indication of how we could kill it. Its underbelly was far less armored than the rest of the monster’s frame, and that was how we could do it.

As I described my idea, a grin seemed to break out on Attia’s lips, and I felt a bit better about it all. The fighting wouldn’t be easy; I wouldn’t be foolish enough to think that, but that Attia didn’t immediately fill my plans full of holes made me think we had a chance.

We needed to find the monster, though. Its general location, at least, and prepare for it. Once that happened, I would call its attention, make it come to us, and we would ensure it regretted ever being born.

It wasn’t as easy as my thoughts put it. It took us a day to get a hint of where that enormous monster might have been, which mainly happened by luck. Then we decided it was better to wait for the following day. Night would fall soon, and we weren’t as confident we could prepare our traps in the dark.

Attia created another cave for us to take refuge in, and we ate something. “Shame you didn’t find a few more of those mushrooms.” She told me before we started eating, and I almost choked on the food, sending her a glare that she answered with a laugh.

I had seen a few but wasn’t foolish enough to grab them. Maybe if everything went well and we started on our way back, I could take some for a special meal for Emily and me, and maybe Amaranth and Mei, though I wasn’t expecting to share any of those with Attia once again.

Afterward, we rested, got up the following morning, and prepared for a fight.

Maybe it was insane to go out hoping to fight a giant monster, but it had to be done.

We started working on what we needed almost immediately, though Attia was the one doing most of the work. In my defense, I would be the one drawing the armadillo close and risking myself. My limited understanding of some elemental manipulations stopped me from being much of a help at first, but then I realized there was still something I could do.

The way Lisette wounded the monster showed even simple spikes could do some damage. So I enhanced one of the traps Attia was readying with some very sharp sticks anchored with a bit of the catgirl’s earth manipulation.
